Trying to enter something every day...

So, last night I finished volume 1 of Chobits, which I'd rented from Greencine. I rented it because I'm working my way through everything by CLAMP, which is a Japanese manga-creating team of four women, most of whose work I like (at some point I'll be writing things about CardCaptor Sakura and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles and and ...).

Anyway. Chobits. Well. It's set in an alternate today, where things are pretty close to the present universe, except that a lot of people have personal computers housed in attractive female mannequin bodies. That walk around, and talk, and stuff. (I'm a little surprised that there aren't any attractive male mannequins.) The main character is Hideki, who's probably about 18 (he just failed to get into college and has moved to Tokyo to go to prep school so he can try again), and he's a nice guy who has no social skills, especially with women. There are various attractive real women around him who would probably be willing to spend more time with him, but he doesn't seem to know how to talk to them. Then he finds a very cute persocomm in the trash, and takes it home, and eventually manages to turn it on (the location of the switch was the thing that made me wonder if this was meant to be R-rated). This persocomm starts out not knowing how to say anything but, "Chi!" (so that becomes her name), and he's trying to teach her things, and keeps getting into a number of somewhat embarrassing situations.

It's kind of cute, and I'm hoping Hideki will learn about how to have a relationship with a real woman rather than a fake one. I'm kind of wondering whether I'm conflating Chi with Ping from Megatokyo (Ping is a Playstation accessory for dating-sim games. Really. See this. Megatokyo is about the adventures of two American gamers in a not-quite-real Tokyo; the current storyline there is also about relationships.)
