The move is finally done, and I can post again. Yay!

Let's see, what's happened since my last post? The closing went very smoothly, and apparently my mortgage company produces far less paperwork than most. I then bought an air-conditioner, and [livejournal.com profile] theodosia graciously helped me get it into my room and running. I took her out to dinner in thanks, and then went to sleep in my new, artificially-cooled room. Unfortunately, I had set the a/c to its power-saver mode, in which the fan cycles on every three minutes to check whether the compressor needs to come on, and that combined with the train noises made sleep difficult. More unfortunately, I was too tired to figure that problem out until the next morning.

The next week was a blur of packing, interspersed with bits of getting various large things delivered (amusingly, one of the guys who delivered the new refrigerator had brought a very similar model to the previous owner not long ago, and, when he saw his delivery schedule, had wondered where on earth they'd be able to put a second one.) Having an air-conditioned room to sleep in really did help, and the trains didn't wake me up once the a/c was set to produce a steady noise.

On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] theodosia earned her crown in Heaven by ferrying many bags of recyclables to the Cambridge DPW, and doing all of the work of dumping them for me, since I strained my back during Readercon and it's still not working right (what with packing and all, I haven't been able to rest it very much.)

I'm quite happy with the new house. The ceiling fans in the kitchen do help to keep it cooler, and I love my new air-conditioner. Current annoyances: the shower doesn't drain as fast as I think it ought to, and the front and screen doors hinge on opposite sides, which makes unlocking the front door a bit more of a challenge than it ought to be. However, if I get a new screen door that hinges on the other side, it'll mean that you have to walk up the porch steps and around the door in order to open it. Which is weird. So I have to think about that.

Glad the closing went smoothly and that the annoyances so far appear to be minor!

Yay new house!

If you can handle goop you may make good progress on the shower drain with a plunger and stick like object to fish things out of the drain with.

I don't mind goop, but the first obstacle in the drain will be figuring out how to remove the stopper; it's the kind that doesn't come out the whole way, but twists so that you can prop it up or let it lie flat. I don't think I can use a plunger while it's in there.

Oh yeah, I've never conquered that. The instructions are always "simply remove the plunger" but I've never figured it out. Good luck!

Congratulations
