I went to see I Capture the Castle last night. I first read the book that it's based on a couple of years ago, when someone in the rec.arts.sf.fandom newsgroup recommended it. It's a wonderful book for a book-loving teenager, and a very good one for a book-loving adult. This is the journal of Cassandra, who will probably be a writer someday, whose father is a writer, whose stepmother is an artist, and who is living in desperate poverty in a drafty, leaky old castle. And then the wealthy Americans show up, and there's a chance that Cassie's beautiful sister Rose will be their ticket out of povery...
It's an intense, moody book, and enthralling, and I was so happy with the movie because it never betrayed the book. It's been long enough since I read the book that I don't remember everything, but the characters seemed reasonable, nothing seemed to have been dumbed down or made happier, and the ending was entirely correct. Sigh.
