Inexplicable behavior

On Tuesday night, while reading LiveJournal, I discovered that there was a new Robin McKinley book. Clearly I had to have it as soon as possible. (It's a juvenile, but I don't care.) So I went to Amazon with my Amazon Premiere subscription so I could get 2-day delivery, and ordered it. They said it would be delivered on Thursday, which was even faster than it needed to be. I was happy.

Days go by. No book arrives. When I look at the tracking page, there's only one line, which says that the carrier was notified to pick up the package. That line usually indicates that someone has started processing the order but nothing else. It's not what I expect to see on the day that the package is scheduled to arrive.

I called this afternoon, and asked what was up. The customer service guy said that clearly something was messed up, and he'd redo the order. Then he came back and said that he couldn't, and his supervisor couldn't, and sometimes these things just happen. I asked what I was supposed to do, and he said that there was some possibility that the book had been sent, so I should check at home, and then call again if it hadn't arrived.

When I got home, there was no book. I called, and got someone who said she'd overnight me a copy, which will arrive on Monday. What I don't understand is why the first guy couldn't do that.

I have it from the library and have read it. Would you like it?

Thank you for offering, but since I'll have my own copy eventually, I should just wait for it.
